Biomanufacturing

Biomanufacturing or bioprocessing is when microorganisms, living cells or their components are used to produce a desired end product.

Centrifuge

Separation equipment: a device that rotates rapidly and uses centrifugal force to separate substances of different densities.

Chromatography

Analytic technique to discover chemical components: a method of finding out which components a gaseous or liquid mixture contains that involves passing it through or over something that absorbs the different components at different rates.

Denaturing agent

molecule, such as a strong acid or base, that ruins the quaternary, tertiary or secondary structure of a protein or nucleic acid.

Insulin

1. A polypeptide hormone secreted by the islets of Langerhans and functioning in the regulation of the metabolism of carbohydrates and fats, especially the conversion of glucose to glycogen, which lowers the blood glucose level. 2. Any of various pharmaceutical preparations containing this hormone that are derived from the pancreas of certain animals or produced through genetic engineering and are used in the medical treatment and management of diabetes mellitus (type I).

Lyophilization

A dehydration process typically used to preserve a perishable material or make the material more convenient for transport.

Lysis

The breaking down of a cell.

Proteases

Enzyme that catalyzes the hydrolytic degradation of proteins  to smaller amino acid chains

Protein

Any of a class of nitrogenous organic compounds that consist of large molecules composed of one or more long chains of amino acids.
